Background
In December 2019, the General Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the General Office of the State Council issued the
Construction Plan for the Great Wall, Grand Canal and Long March National Cultural Parks, with the basic construction tasks completed by the end of 2023. As a magnificent epic written by the Communist Party of China and the Red Army, the Long March stands as a great miracle in human history. The construction of the Long March National Cultural Park serves as a vital approach to inheriting the Long March spirit and carrying forward the red gene. The relic site of the Red Army's crossing of Jiajin Mountain was designated as a Sichuan Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Unit in 2020.
Overview
Jiajin Mountain National Forest Park is situated in the northern part of Baoxing County, Ya'an City. Boasting abundant animal and plant resources, a pristine ecological environment, diverse ecosystems, and a well-preserved vertical vegetation spectrum, the park is the source of the Qingyi River and also one of the sources of the Yangtze River. It was the site where the 1st Front Army of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army successfully joined forces with the 4th Front Army during the Long March.

Jiajin Mountain was the first major snow-capped mountain crossed by the Red Army, making it a site of pivotal events in the history of the Long March. It was the first high snow mountain conquered by the Central Red Army (the 1st Front Army) on its Long March. Later, the 4th Front Army crossed Jiajin Mountain twice, once when moving south and once when marching north. The Red Army's three crossings of Jiajin Mountain during the Long March have been immortalized in history. This relic site provides crucial physical evidence for the study of modern Chinese revolutionary history and the history of the Red Army's Long March.
The crossing of Jiajin Mountain marked and witnessed a watershed in the Long March: the erroneous southward march and the correct northward route of the Red Army. Retracing the Long March route allows people to experience the great journey of the Red Army and embody the spirit of enduring hardships and fighting with unyielding determination until victory.
Plan
The original terrain, landforms, structures and vegetation of the mountain-crossing trail are well preserved, offering exceptional conditions for showcasing the natural environment. However, cultural elements related to the Red Army's crossing of Jiajin Mountain are severely lacking, and the existing red cultural sculptures and installations are inadequate in their exhibition functions, requiring targeted optimization and upgrading.
The winning implementation plan designed by David Design is developed in accordance with the
Protection and Construction Plan for the Sichuan Section of the Long March National Cultural Park. It aims to build a key exhibition park for the crossing of Jiajin Mountain, highlighting the design theme of conquering the natural barrier of the snow-capped mountain, and promoting the Long March spirit. It will also establish a demonstration zone for the integration of culture and tourism in Baoxing: themed on challenging limits, it integrates the natural scenery of Jiajin Mountain and the Giant Panda National Park, to create a tourist destination featuring giant panda ecological culture.
